Reds vs. White Sox Prediction, Odds, Probable Pitchers, Prop Bets for Wednesday, Aug. 12

In this story:
The Cincinnati Reds are clinging to any bit of life in the National League wild card race, as they’re 5.5 games out of the final spot after beating the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.
Cincy has right-hander Rhett Lowder (5.26 ERA) on the mound in this matchup against White Sox veteran Luis Castillo (5.30 ERA), who was dealt to the franchise ahead of the All-Star break.
The Reds remain under .500 after Tuesday’s win, and they have several teams they’ll need to pass in order to make the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the White Sox are in the driver’s seat to win the AL Central, but they’ve struggled a bit over their last 10 games, going 4-6. Chicago still has a 2.5-game lead in the division, but that’s not nearly enough of a cushion for the team to coast over the final weeks of the regular season.
Oddsmakers have set the White Sox as favorites at home, where they are 13 games over .500 in the 2026 season.
Let’s take a look at the odds, a player prop to bet and my prediction for Game 2 of this three-game set.

- Sal Stewart to Hit a Home Run (+451)
In today’s edition of Daily Dinger – our best home run picks column at SI Betting – I broke down why this is a solid matchup for Stewart:
Cincinnati Reds rookie Sal Stewart has put together a monster 2026 season, hitting .254 with 25 home runs and an .803 OPS.
Stewart has done a lot of his damage against right-handed pitching, homering 19 times even though he’s posted a better batting average against lefties. The Reds star has also been on a power surge, going deep six times in his last 22 games.
That puts him in a good spot against the Chicago White Sox and veteran right-hander Luis Castillo (a former Red).
Castillo has a 5.30 ERA this season, and he’s been rocked in his last four starts, allowing eight home runs. Overall, the former All-Star has given up 17 home runs in 21 appearances this season.
The Reds have a few potential targets in this market, but Stewart has been the hottest hitter out of their top home-run hitters as of late. I think he’s worth a look at this price on Wednesday.
Reds vs. White Sox Prediction and Pick
I love getting a total at plus money, especially when we’re getting a whole number, giving the possibility of a push on Wednesday.
These teams combined for nine runs in the series opener, and this pitching matchup suggests that we’ll see a bunch of runs again on Wednesday night.
Lowder ranks in the 10th percentile in expected ERA and the 17th percentile in expected batting average against this season, and he was temporarily removed from the rotation as a result of his struggles.
The right-hander has a tough matchup against a White Sox team that ranks in the top half of the league in Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+) and OPS this season.
Meanwhile, Castillo was essentially salary-dumped by Seattle at the deadline, and he was knocked around for five runs in four innings in his first outing for Chicago. Since July 1, Castillo has a 6.33 ERA in five starts, allowing eight home runs in the process.
Even though the Reds are last in MLB in wRC+ this season, I think nine runs is very doable based on this pitching matchup.
The OVER has hit in 53.4 percent of the Reds’ games this season and a league-best 57.8 percent of Chicago's games in 2026.
Pick: OVER 9 (+102 at DraftKings)
