Peter’s Points: WNBA Best Bets Today (Predictions, Prop Bets for Valkyries-Lynx, Gabby Williams, Dream-Sparks)

Sports Illustrated's Peter Dewey breaks down his favorite bets for the WNBA action on Monday, August 24.

The two top teams in the WNBA standings are set to face off on Monday night in a potential Finals preview with less than 10 games left for each team in the regular season.

Olivia Miles, Napheesa Collier and the Minnesota Lynx could clinch the top spot in the W this season against the Golden State Valkyries, who have dropped two games in a row and are in danger of falling back behind the Las Vegas Aces (half a game back) with a loss on Monday.

That game highlights this two-game slate, as the No. 4-seeded Atlanta Dream are also in action, taking on the Los Angeles Sparks for the third and final time in the regular season. Atlanta picked up a 36-point win against L.A. back on Aug. 20, and it’s heavily favored to complete a sweep of the season series on Monday.

After a week away, I’m back with another edition of Peter’s Points with the WNBA nearing a break for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.

Will we see the No. 1 seed locked up tonight? I’m betting on the Lynx getting it done.

Let’s break down that play and more for this two-game slate on Aug. 24.

WNBA Best Bets Today

Odds via DraftKings Sportsbook

  • Atlanta Dream-Minnesota Lynx Moneyline Parlay (-146)
  • Gabby Williams UNDER 13.5 Points (-113)

Atlanta Dream-Minnesota Lynx Moneyline Parlay (-146)

Atlanta Dream

The Dream faced the Sparks in Los Angeles on Thursday, blowing them out by 36 points (124-88) to continue their run up the standings. Now, the No. 4 seed in the W, Atlanta is just 1.5 games out of the No. 2 seed with seven games to play in the regular season.

Meanwhile, the Sparks are eliminated from the playoffs and have slipped to six games under .500 at home. Overall, Los Angeles is 12th in the WNBA in net rating and 13th in defensive rating, which simply won’t cut it against a Dream squad that ranks in the top five in net, offensive and defensive rating this season.

The Dream are also 2-0 against the Sparks this season and have scored over 100 points in both meetings. They should be able to win this matchup rather easily on Monday.

Minnesota Lynx

Minnesota has won six games in a row and can clinch the top spot in the WNBA with a home win on Monday night.

The Lynx are an impressive 14-5 at home, and they deserve to be favored against a Golden State team that has dropped two games in a row, including an 11-point loss at home to the Lynx back on Aug. 19.

The Valkyries are the best defensive team in the WNBA this season, but they are a combined 0-6 against Minnesota and Las Vegas (the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds) in six games. That’s a major concern when it comes to the Valkyries’ championship viability, and they have lost multiple games to the Lynx by at least two possessions.

I don’t see Golden State pulling off an upset in this spot, especially after it dropped a game to Chicago on Friday. Minnesota has simply been too good (plus-10.7 net rating) to avoid taking in a two-team moneyline parlay.

Gabby Williams UNDER 13.5 Points (-113)

In my betting preview for the Valkyries vs. Lynx showdown, I explained why Gabby Williams is a player that bettors should fade on Monday:

Valkyries star forward Gabby Williams has put together a strong season, averaging 14.4 points per game while shooting 40.9 percent from the field and 33.1 percent from 3.

While Williams’ efficiency has dipped a bit as of late, she’s been one of the more consistent offensive options for this Golden State team. So, it was pretty shocking when she played less than 14 minutes in the team’s most recent loss to the Chicago Sky, finishing with just two points.

Even though it appears that Williams was held out for rest, she is coming off back-to-back poor shooting performances. The former UConn star was just 4-for-15 in a loss to the Lynx on Aug. 19, finishing with 10 points. She’s been held under 13.5 points in two of her three games against Minnesota (five, 15 and 10 points) while shooting a combined 12-for-41 from the field. The volume is there, but Williams has clearly been frustrated by a Lynx team that is No. 2 in the WNBA in defensive rating and No. 3 in opponent points per game.

Overall, Williams has 14 or more points in 20 of her 34 games this season, but she’s averaging just 12.4 points in 23.1 minutes per game since July 1.
