Report: Canelo Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin verbally agree to 2017 fight

Linear middleweight Canelo Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 knockouts) and WBA/WBC/IBF champion Gennady Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) have reached a verbal agreement to possibly fight in the fall of 2017, according to the Los Angeles Times and ESPN.
“They made it clear they want to build it up for next year,” Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler told the LA Times. “There’s nothing binding, but Canelo and [promoter] Golden Boy seem sincere in making the fight happen if we can work out the details.”
Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Alvarez, also tweeted the following:

Alvarez, 25, plans to fight at the light-middleweight limit of 154 pounds in September. An opponent has not been announced. Most recently, he knocked out Amir Khan in the sixth round of a bout on May 7. His lone loss came against Floyd Mayweather.
Golovkin may also fight in September.
