Geno Auriemma Feuds With Dawn Staley As South Carolina Ends UConn’s Title Defense in Final Four

In this story:
UConn coach Geno Auriemma was disgusted with the officiating (and with South Carolina’s Dawn Staley) as the Gamecocks rolled over the undefeated Huskies 62–48 in the women’s Final Four on Friday night.
UConn was held to just 31% shooting from the floor and a paltry 29% mark from three to lose its first game all season in the national semifinal. South Carolina, meanwhile, shot 38% from the floor and outrebounded Connecticut 47–32 in a dominant performance on the glass.
The end result, a 14-point defeat for the Huskies, left the longtime UConn coach absolutely beside himself. The first signs of boiled-over frustration came in an interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe at the end of the third quarter. Auriemma voiced his frustration with the officiating, noting that all six fouls called in the third quarter came against UConn, while noting that Staley’s frequent sideline barbs at the officials were likely a contributing factor.
“There were six fouls called that quarter, all of them against us, and they’ve been beating the s--- out of our guys down there the entire game. And I’m not making excuses because we haven’t been able to make a shot. But this is ridiculous. Their coach rants and raves on the sideline and calls the referee some names you don’t want to hear. Now we have Sarah Strong down there with a ripped jersey and they go, ‘I didn’t see it.’ Come on, man, this is for the national championship.”

Things, of course, didn’t get better for UConn in the fourth. The Huskies, who were down just five points after the third, were outscored by nine in the final frame in the loss.
In the handshake line, things got even more tense. Auriemma had some choice words for the Gamecocks coach, a tense interaction that Staley said Auriemma initiated.
In the postgame interview with ESPN, Staley dismissed the altercation with Auriemma and turned the focus back on her team’s performance in advancing to the national championship.
“I have no idea. But I’m gonna let you know this. I’m of integrity. I’m of integrity. So if I did something wrong to Geno, I had no idea what I did. I guess he thought I didn’t shake his hand at the beginning of the game. I didn’t know. I went down there pregame, shook everyone on his staff’s hand … sometimes things get heated, we move on. … I’m super proud of our kids and I’m not going to let any of this take anything away from the performance on the floor.”

When asked in postgame media availability about the altercation, Staley reiterated that “you’d have to ask Geno,” and further noted that he’s the one “that initiated the conversation.” Auriemma effectively declined comment after the game, saying that he "said what he had to say" to Staley, but didn't elaborate further.
Auriemma will likely want some of this back, but his frustration in his program losing its only game all season in the Final Four has to sting, especially to South Carolina, which has had UConn’s number several times over the last decade, including Friday night, when the Huskies’ bid for back-to-back national titles came to an end.
