Sophomore Danny Etling has been named Purdue's starting quarterback, coach Darrell Hazell announced Monday.

Etling, who beat out sophomore Austin Appleby for the job, started the final seven games of 2013, completing 55.8 percent of his passes for 1,690 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Terre Haute, Ind., native threw for 485 yards and four touchdowns in a Nov. 30 loss to Indiana.

Etling was a highly regarded prospect coming out of Terre Haute South (Ind.) High, earning a four-star rating from the recruiting website as the No. 9-ranked pro-style quarterback in the class of 2013.

The Boilermakers, which went winless in the Big Ten and finished 1-11 last season, open their 2014 campaign Aug. 30 against Western Michigan.
