For the second time in the last three years, the Penn State Nittany Lions will begin a college football season with a new head coach. Following the departure of Bill O'Brien to the NFL and the Houston Texans, the program hired James Franklin from Vanderbilt

Although the offensive line only returns one starter and the team also lost wide receiver Allen Robinson, sophomore quarterback​ Christian Hackenberg is back. Hackenberg was the first sophomore named team captain in program history.
