Michigan interim athletic director Jim Hackett issued an open letter on Sunday afternoon asking fans to support the team after Saturday’s 27–23 loss to Michigan State

The Wolverines were up 23–21 with 10 seconds left in the game when punter Blake O’Neill fumbled the snap and Michigan State sophomore Jalen Watts-Jackson came up with the ball and scored the game-winning touchdown.

Although O’Neill is not specifically mentioned in Hackett’s letter, he urges fans to avoid “thoughtless comments.”  Hackett goes on to say that he believes the negative comments “come from a small minority, none of whom are reflective of our institution.”

O’Neill is a fifth year senior and played at Weber State before joining Michigan’s team.

Michigan is 5–2 and has a bye in Week 8. It next plays Minnesota on the road in Week 9.
