The Mountain West Conference announced Monday at its annual meeting in Phoenix, Ariz. that it will not expand beyond its current members.

“Noting the stability and collegiality of the current 12-member configuration, it was agreed no modifications were necessary at the present time,” the league announced in a statement. “The Conference will continue to monitor the membership landscape of intercollegiate athletics going forward.”

Rice and UTEP were potential candidates to join the Mountain West, CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd reported.

Dodd also reported that expansion was not imminent given revenue considerations.

UTEP and Rice have been members of Conference-USA since 2005.

The Mountain West has 12 football members and only 11 basketball-playing schools, with Hawaii presently a member of the Big West Conference.
