NCAA Tournament: Day 1

Day 1 of the NCAA Tournament was no snoozer. Here are some of SI's best shots from opening day.<br><br>Senior Danero Thomas finished with 11 points, but none bigger than this jumper as time expired to send the 13th-seeded Racers into the second round after its upset of Vanderbilt.

Center Tony Easley got good position inside against the Vanderbilt interior to help Murray State, which collected its first NCAA tourney win since 1988 and improved to 31-4.

Ohio 97, Georgetown 83

Ohio was a No. 9 seed for the MAC tourney, but not only earned a spot in the NCAAs, it recorded the day's biggest upset, knocking off the third-seeded Hoyas. Senior Armon Bassett collected 32 points on 10-of-19 shooting for the Bobcats.

Freshman Reggie Keely was 3-of-4 from the field for six points as the Bobcats (22-14) won their sixth straight game and their first NCAA tourney contest in 27 years.

Wake Forest 81, Texas 80 (OT)

Ishmael Smith's last shot meant one more collapse for Texas. His pull-up jumper from about 17 feet out with 1.3 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the ninth-seeded Deamon Deacons over No. 8 Texas. UT twice rallied from double-digit deficits, then blew an eight-point lead in overtime, completing a puzzling slide after being ranked No. 1 in the country in January.

Washington 80, Marquette 78

Quincy Pondexter (No. 20) drove for a tiebreaking bank shot with 1.7 seconds left, and 11th-seeded Washington extended its remarkable late-season run into the NCAA tournament. The Huskies (25-9) won their eighth straight game in dramatic fashion, rallying from a 15-point deficit with 13:30 minutes left.

Kentucky 100, East Tennessee State 71

Freshman Eric Bledsoe (No. 24) gets two on the drive, but he was a bigger thorn from the outside, as his eight three-pointers set a Kentucky record for an NCAA tourney game. Connecting on his first eight long-range attempts, Blesdoe finished with 29 points as UK dominated.

Northern Iowa 69, UNLV 66

Senior Ali Farokhmanesh connected on a 3-pointer with 4.9 seconds remaming to lift the Panthers into the second round. Northern Iowa, which broke a string of four first-round setbacks, hadn't won a game in the NCAAs since upsetting third-seeded Missouri in 1990.

Kansas 90, Lehigh 74

Sophomore Marcus Morris collected 26 points and 11 rebounds, both game highs, as Kansas (33-2) fell into its season-long pattern of playing in spurts, giving No. 16 seed Lehigh (22-11) hope of making college basketball history. The Jayhawks led by just six in the first half and didn't pull away until midway through the second in securing a date with Northern Iowa on Saturday.

Tennessee 62, San Diego St. 59

Freshman Kenny Hall fell short in this shot attempt, but Tennessee, behind Melvin Goins' fourth 3-pointer with 19 seconds left, kept San Diego State winless in the NCAA tournament. The Vols, seeded sixth, will face upstart Ohio on Saturday.

New Mexico 62, Montana 57

Things were going so well for New Mexico's Dairese Gary, it almost seemed like a blur. The junior scored 15 points, including seven free throws over the final 3:36, as the Lobos (30-4) used a 17-0 second-half run to knock off pesky Montana.

Old Dominion 51, Notre Dame 50

In one of the first upsets of the tournment, Gerald Lee and No. 11-seed Old Dominion toppled No. 6 Notre Dame. Ben Hansbrough (23) led the Irish with 17 points and six boards.

Junior forward Carleton Scott had 14 points and 10 rebounds, but he failed to sink a three-pointer in the final seconds for the win.

Frank Hassell (21) and Old Dominion held Notre Dame forward Tim Abromaitis to nine points, well below his 16.3 average.

It took two overtimes, but No. 7 BYU managed to hold off Erik Murphy and the No. 10 Gators.

Baylor 68, Sam Houston 59

Sophomore Quincy Acy (No. 4) was one of four Bears to reach double figures. His seven boards helped third-seeded Baylor to a 45-34 rebounding advantage.

Kansas State senior Curtis Kelly gets two of his 15 points the easy way -- and causes some frustration among North Texas defenders along the way. The Wildcats, seeded second, earned a date with Brigham Young Saturday.

St. Mary's 80, Richmond 71

St. Mary's center Omar Samhan (No. 50) not only had game highs with 29 points and 12 rebounds, but he played a little defense, too, making Richmond's David Gonzalvez take a tough shot. The Gaels outrebounded the Spiders 40-18 in earning their first NCAA tourney victory since 1959.

Butler 77, UTEP 59

Shelvin Mack (No. 1) sparked a second-half surge to help Butler keep the nation's longest winning streak (21 straight) intact. The sophomore hit a career-high seven 3-pointers and scored 18 of his 25 points after halftime as the Bulldogs rallied from a six-point halftime deficit.

Junior forward Antonio Pena struggled to get anything done against Robert Morris, going 0-for-1 from the field and grabbing two rebounds.

No.15-seed Robert Morris gave No. 2 Villanova a run for its money, thanks in part to guard Mezie Nwigwe, who had 13 points and three steals.
