Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe resigns after 13 seasons

Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe resigned on Monday after 13 season with the Demon Deacons.

Grobe's resignation was first reported by the Winston-Salem Journal and ESPN's Bretty McMurphy.

Wake’s 23-21 loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday was the final game in the Demon Deacons' fifth straight losing season. Wake Forest finished the year 4-8.

In a statement, athletic director Ron Wellman emphasized the highlights of Grobe's career at the school:

"Jim Grobe's tenure at Wake Forest will go down as the greatest run of football success in school history," said Wellman. "Jim and his staff have lifted our program to great heights. Every Demon Deacon fan will be forever grateful for the 2006 ACC Championship and the trip to the Orange Bowl. Jim showed us that winning championships is a worthy and realistic goal for us. We are indebted to him for raising our expectations.

"Jim Grobe is one of the finest people I have ever met. There wasn't a time when I did not look forward to meeting with him."

The Demon Deacons' 2006 ACC title was their first since 1970. Wake Forest beat Georgia Tech 9-6 in the conference title game and reached the Orange Bowl, where the Demon Deacons lost to Louisville to finish the season 11-3. For his work that season, Grobe garnered coach of the year honors from both the ACC and the Associated Press .
