Creighton Bluejays guard Grant Gibbs may return from injury Friday

Since Grant Gibbs crumpled to the floor in a game against DePaul with a dislocated kneecap, Creighton has won five of six games. Now it may not be long before Gibbs and the Bluejays return to full strength.

Positive results from the practice floor this week have Gibbs thinking he may play Friday in the rematch against DePaul in some role. If he plays, it will be his first game action since Jan. 7.

"I think there’s a decent chance," Gibbs said in a phone interview Thursday. "Even if I do, probably not extended minutes, but I practiced full (on Wednesday) pretty much. It’s not quite back to 100 percent but it’s playable. So we’ll see what we want to do."

The kneecap injury called for a four-to-six week recovery period -- actually the best-case scenario after initial fears of a torn ACL -- which would put Gibbs on schedule for active duty soon. Though optimistic, Gibbs acknowledged there was no official decision on his availability Friday and deemed himself day-to-day.

Still, Creighton, already cutting a swath through the new Big East, will be happy to have the services of a primary ball-handler who was averaging 6.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists this season.
