Iowa quarterback Nic Shimonek has decided to transfer to Texas Tech, Shimonek told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

Shimonek said he chose the Red Raiders because Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury's spread offense is similar to what Shimonek ran in high school, and a better fit for his skills than Iowa's pro-style system.

A native of Corsicana, Texas, Shimonek was a three-star recruit in the class of 2013 according to Rivals.com. He redshirted last season for the Hawkeyes.

Texas Tech was in need of quarterback depth after seeing several players at the position leave the team since last season: Baker Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma, Michael Brewer left for Virginia Tech and Clayton Nicholas went to Bowling Green. Starter Davis Webb returns for the Red Raiders this season.

Per transfer rules, Shimonek will sit out this year and have three seasons of eligibility remaining after that. He'll begin as a walk-on at Texas Tech with the hope of eventually earning a scholarship.
