Florida freshman DT Thomas Holley out for season after hip surgery

Florida defensive tackle Thomas Holley will sit out his freshman season after undergoing hip surgery. Holley will get a medical redshirt, and have four years of eligibility remaining.

Florida defensive tackle Thomas Holley will sit out his freshman season after undergoing hip surgery, according to an AP report. Holley will get a medical redshirt, and have four years of eligibility remaining. 

Holley was a four-star recruit and ranked the No. 2 defensive tackle in the nation by Rivals.com. He was highly recruited, and also received offers from Alabama, Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Baylor, among others.

According to the AP, Florida head coach Will Muschamp said Holley had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his hip joint, the result of a sports hernia sustained in high school. 

Florida opens the season on August 30 against Idaho.
