Vanderbilt announced last week that Johnson would not be allowed to return to the team.

Johnson, who was suspended all of last season for what he described in a letter as a "violation of the good conduct expected of all Vanderbilt students", led the Commodores with 12.5 points per game in 2012-13.

Memphis will file a waiver to make Johnson eligible right away, according to CBSSports.com. Johnson has two years of eligibility remaining.

The Tigers lost their top two scorers, Joe Jackson and Michael Dixon, from the team that went 24-10 and earned a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament last season.
