Michael Brewer was named Virginia Tech's starting quarterback by head coach Frank Beamer on Saturday, the school announced.

Brewer, a transfer from Texas Tech, graduated this past spring and enrolled this summer at Virginia Tech, where he will pursue a master's degree.

Brewer beat out redshirt senior Mark Leal. Brenden Motley was the No. 1 quarterback in the spring, but the sophomore has battled a back injury in camp.

"Both [Brewer and Leal] are going to be needed in the season," said offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler in the school's announcement. "You always need a good, solid starter and a good backup."

Brewer had five touchdown passes in two seasons with Texas Tech after redshirting in 2011. He had 440 passing yards in 13 career games.

The Hokies open their season next Saturday at home against William & Mary.
