College football Week 1 highlights
The first college football Saturday of 2014 featured an abundance of highlight plays. Here is a roundup of some of the best:
Jameis Winston made some amazing plays en route to winning the Heisman Trophy last season, but I don’t think we’ve ever seen him fake out this many defenders on one touchdown run.
Nebraska receiver Jordan Westerkamp broke Northwestern fans’ hearts with a game-winning Hail Mary catch last year. His behind-the-back snatch against Florida Atlantic was far more impressive.
Alabama receiver DeAndrew White broke everyone’s ankles on this run after the catch.
What’s more terrifying for a would-be tackler than Todd Gurley charging at the line of scrimmage? Todd Gurley breaking into a full sprint on a long return. The star Georgia tailback was not touched after catching the ball a few yards behind his own goal line and carrying it 100 yards, past the other goal line.
It’s safe to assume Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds regrets not handing the ball off on this play.

UCLAscored three defensive touchdowns against Virginia, all in the second quarter.
Penn State receiver Geno Lewis was bumped off balance the first time he tried to haul in this pass. But he kept his eye on the ball and secured it as he dove to the ground.
Shortly after running 35 yards on a wild reverse play, Iowa receiver Tevaun Smith executed an acrobatic one-handed touchdown grab.
West Virginia receiver Kevin White leapt high over Alabama cornerback Bradley Sylve to snatch this touchdown pass near the back of the end zone. At least one Mountaineers fan was ecstatic.
Moments after Alabama took a seven-point lead in the second quarter on a one-yard run, West Virginia receiver Mario Alford returned a kick 100 yards for a touchdown.
