Georgia, Texas A&M climb; Florida State remains No. 1 in Week 2 AP Poll

Georgia and Texas A&M rose in the AP Poll after their big Week 1 wins. Here's the latest top 25.

The Associated Press released its new top 25 rankings Tuesday. Here are a few thoughts on the poll:

Florida State still received 46 of the possible 59 first-place votes despite the Seminoles' closer-than-expected win over Oklahoma State on Saturday. Four SEC teams also received at least one first-place vote: Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M and LSU. Auburn is the only team in the top six that did not receive a first-place vote.

Ohio State survived a test against Navy last weekend, but the Buckeyes still dropped from No. 5 to No. 8 in this week’s poll. Perhaps a few voters are questioning this Ohio State squad without Braxton Miller.
Texas A&M smashed South Carolina on Thursday night in one of the week’s more surprising results, and accordingly, the Aggies and Gamecocks flipped AP rankings. A&M moved up from No. 21 to No. 9, with South Carolina falling in the opposite fashion. Coach Kevin Sumlin’s crew even grabbed two first-place votes, which is quite a statement for a team many doubted coming into the year. It seems a bit early to sell all of your South Carolina stock, though, especially if the Gamecocks rebound to top Georgia in two weeks.

STAPLES: No Johnny? No problem for Texas A&M against South Carolina

Speaking of the Bulldogs, Georgia rocketed into the top 10 thanks to a blowout of Clemson in Athens. Sitting at No. 6, the Bulldogs are now a trendy pick to sneak into the College Football Playoff. That nonconference win is a nice feather in Georgia's cap.
No. 25 Louisville is the only new face in the AP Poll. The Cardinals opened their season on Monday night with a 31-13 win over Miami in Louisville. Does Bobby Petrino's crew have what it takes to make some noise in the ACC, where Florida State is expected to dominate? The Seminoles are the class of the league right now and are the only ACC squad ranked higher than 21st in this week's poll. But the Cards face the Seminoles in Louisville on Oct. 30, a Thursday night. That could be an intriguing game later on.
