Muhammad was held out the first two games of the season -- but was allowed to practice -- while Miami evaluated whether he violated the school's code of conduct, according to the Associated Press. If Muhammad elects to return to Miami, he would not lose a year of eligibility. If he transfers to another school, Muhammad would have to sit out the rest of this season in compliance with NCAA transfer rules.

Muhammad recorded eight tackles and two sacks in 13 games as a freshman last season. The Don Bosco (N.J.) Prep product was rated the No. 3 weakside defensive end in the class of 2013 by the recruiting website Rivals.com.

Miami (1-1) hosts Arkansas State on Saturday.
