Massachusetts Minutemen vs. Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State hosts the Massachusetts Minutemen at Beaver Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions enter the game undefeated, with their last win coming over Rutgers in Week 3. UMass is still in search of its first win of the season after three-point losses to Colorado and Vanderbilt. This will be the first meeting between the schools.

Nittany Lions sophomore quarterback Christian Hackenberg became the 10th quarterback in Penn State history to throw for 4,000 yards in his career after throwing for more than 300 yards last weekend in a win over Rutgers. 

The 300-yard performance against Rutgers was the fourth straight 300-yard passing game for Hackenberg. He led the fourth game-winning or game-tying drive of his career last week.

Penn State is 22-3 against current members of the Mid-American Conference.

The Nittany Lions are unbeaten through the first three weeks of the season for the first time since 2009. 

The Penn State defense has held opponents to 12.3 points and 275.7 yards of total offense per game, which rank first and third in the Big Ten this season. The five interceptions by the defense ranks sixth in the nation. 

All five of Penn State's interceptions came against Rutgers last week, led by Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Trevor Williams' two interceptions.

Massacusetts facts

UMass head coach Mark Whipple began his second stint with the Minutemen this season. Whipple has a career record of 49-29 at Massachusetts. 

The Minutemen will become the 154th different opponent to play Penn State. 

UMass has scored more than 30 points in each of their last two games, but late collapses led to losses.

Penn State head coach James Franklin and UMass assistant head coach Dave Sollazzo previously worked together during two separate stints in the 2000s.

UMass' 247 rushing yards ranks 113th in the nation. They are averaging just 2.7 yards per carry.
