Georgia Southern beats Appalachian State 34-14

STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) Quarterback Kevin Ellison ran for 151 yards, Matt Breida added 135 yards and Georgia Southern beat Appalachian State 34-14 on Thursday night, spoiling the Mountaineers' Sun Belt Conference debut.

Ellison had 21 carries and scored on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter for the Eagles (3-2, 2-0). He completed 6 of 10 passes for 73 yards a touchdown, a 17-yarder to BJ Johnson with 2:17 left in the first half.

Breida had 12 carries. He opened the scoring with a 56-yard run on the first possession of the game.

Taylor Lamb was 23 of 42 for 256 yards for Appalachian State (1-3, 0-1). He had a 19-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter.

Both teams are in their first year in the Sun Belt and the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision.
