The uniforms will honor the 90th anniversary of Grange's performance versus Michigan on Oct. 18, 1924, which saw him run for four touchdowns in the first 12 minutes and account for six touchdowns overall.
After that game, sports writer Grantland Rice called Grange a "gray ghost," which inspired the name of the uniforms.
"One of my favorite quotes about Red Grange, they described him as a gray ghost - super elusive, super fast - so we created a gray look for this game as an alternate," said Nike football designer Josh Iverson. "It has hidden details; think of this elusive ghost idea."
The Fighting Illini (3-4) play the Golden Gophers (5-1) on Oct. 25.
