PHILADELPHIA (AP) DeAndre Haywood scored five of his 23 points in overtime, including a pair of free throws with five seconds left, as Delaware State defeated Penn 77-75 in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night.

Haywood rebounded a missed 3-point attempt by Penn's Tony Hicks and was fouled with the Hornets up 75-72. After the free throws extended the lead to 77-72, Hicks made a 3-pointer as time expired.

Hicks scored 14 of his 31 points in the second half, but missed a 3-pointer and a jumper in the final 50 seconds and the score tied 65-65.

Tyshawn Bell made one of two free throws to knot the score with 1:12 left in regulation, completing a Hornet comeback from eight points down in the final 6:30.

Bell finished with 19 points and Kendall Gray added 17 with nine rebounds. Delaware State led by 10 early before Hicks brought Penn back.
