Young scores 22 to help Oregon beat Detroit 83-66

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) Joseph Young shook off a sluggish first half to score 22 points and Jalil Abdul-Bassit added 17 off the bench as Oregon pulled away for a 83-66 victory over Detroit on Monday night.

Young, who finished just 1-for-12 from 3-point range, went for 18 points in the second half. After being tied at 35 at the half, the Ducks (2-0) went ahead for good at 48-45 on Abdul-Bassit's 3-pointer with 15 minutes to play, the last of 15 lead changes, and outscored the Titans (1-1) 35-21 the rest of the way.

Abdul-Bassit's 17 points and six rebounds were career highs for the senior from Anchorage, Alaska.

Dillon Brooks added 14 points for Oregon, and Elgin Cook had 10. Cook's dunk with 17 seconds left gave Oregon its final points and its largest lead of the game.

Juwan Howard Jr. led Detroit with 16 points. Jarrod Williams added 15 points and Anton Wilson had 14.

The Titans lost Howard to his fourth foul with 11:38 left to play and Oregon up just 54-51. By the time Howard returned, the Ducks' lead had grown to 11 points.

Oregon struggled from 3-point range, shooting just 27.3 percent (9 of 33) from beyond the arc and 44.8 percent overall. They held a 47-37 edge on the boards, led by Jordan Bell's nine rebounds.

Matthew Grant led the Titans in rebounds with eight.

Abdul-Bassit pushed Oregon's lead to double digits for the first time at 64-53 with a 3 with 8 minutes left, and his last 3-pointer capped an 8-0 run for a 74-59 lead with 4:45 to play.

Both teams struggled to establish any offensive rhythm in the first half. Howard scored Detroit's first seven points but was held scoreless the rest of the first half as the teams traded the lead nine times on the way to a 35-35 tie.

The biggest lead for the Titans was 24-17 thanks to an 8-0 run on back-to-back corner 3-pointers by Wilson and a goaltending call on Grant's driving layup with 7:23 left in the half.

The Ducks answered with their own 8-0 run for a 25-24 lead. Abdul-Bassit closed out the half by scoring Oregon's last six points.

Detroit: Howard, a Detroit native who transferred from Western Michigan three years ago, will have his first chance to play against his father's alma mater when the Titans meet Michigan on Thursday night at the Crisler Center. Juwan Howard was a member of the Fab Five with the Wolverines.

Oregon: Three nights after scoring 25 points in the first half of a 107-56 season-opening win over Coppin State, Young had just four, all on free throws, against the Titans by halftime. Young was 0-for-7 from the field at the half and finished 7-for-23.
