Georgia Southern routs Div. II Johnson (FL) 97-41

STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) Jelani Hewitt scored 19 points to lead five players in double figures as Georgia Southern routed NCCAA Division-II Johnson University (Florida) 97-41 on Saturday night.

The game was tied at eight in the first half when the Eagles sparked a 26-3 run with five 3-pointers, and led 58-19 at the break. Georgia Southern (2-1) finished with 15 3-pointers - 10 in the first half - on 43 attempts.

Hewitt was 5 of 10 from behind the arc. Angel Matias and Mike Hughes each scored 12 points, and Trent Wiedeman, Coye Simmons and Curtis Diamond all chipped in 10. Matias grabbed 16 boards as the Eagles out-rebounded the Suns 62-30.

Kaleb Baker led Johnson University with 10 points, and Chris Hilaire added four assists.

Georgia Southern outscored the Suns in the paint 52-22, and had 35 second-chance points.
