Montana defeats NAIA Carroll College 75-52

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) Martin Breunig scored 18 points with 10 rebounds and Brandon Gfeller drained 5 3-pointers as Montana used a hot first half to break away from NAIA Carroll College 75-52 and win their home opener Wednesday night.

The Griz (2-2) shot 50 percent from the field - and 4 of 12 from 3-point range - in the first half to led 36-23 at the break. Gfeller shot only from long range, hitting five of his nine 3-point tries to score 15 points. Michael Weisner added 12 points.

Oliver Carr scored 13 and Zayn Kirkendoll 11 for the Saints. Zach Taylor, second in NAIA scoring, was held to three points on 1-of-6 shooting.

Breunig scored the first eight points for Montana and blocked Carr on a layup attempt as the Griz battled past the scrappy Saints. The Griz finished 28-61 from the field.

Carroll (9-3) has matched its wins from last season.
