Saint Mary's (Cal) romps past Cal Poly 82-56

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) Brad Waldow scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to power Saint Mary's to an 82-56 romp past Cal Poly Saturday night.

The victory keeps the Gaels (5-0) perfect to start the season.

Cal Poly jumped to a 6-2 lead early in the first half, but Saint Mary's offense roared to life behind a pair of Desmond Simmons' 3-pointers. The Mustangs rallied and led, 22-20 with 7:46 left in the first half, but the Gaels responded with an offensive push that gave them a 44-32 lead at intermission.

Saint Mary's opened the second half with an 11-0 flourish to make it 55-32.

Simmons finished with 14 points for Saint Mary's and Kerry Carter added another 13. The Gaels were 28 of 58 from the field (48.3 percent).

David Nwaba had 19 points to lead Cal Poly (2-3). The Mustangs shot 19 of 56 (33.9 percent) from the field.
