BYU tops Utah State 91-81

LOGAN, Utah (AP) Tyler Haws came into the game against Utah State Tuesday night as one of the top scorers in the country. Haws didn't disappoint, scoring a season-high 35 points - 26 of them in the second half - as BYU rallied to beat USU 91-81.

It was the first win in Logan for the Cougars since 2000. USU had a 29-game winning streak against in-state competition snapped with the loss.

It was Haws's 55th 20-point game for the Cougars (6-2). Kyle Collinsworth added 20 points and 10 rebounds while Anson Winder added 17 points for BYU.

''The guys are really excited about this win,'' BYU coach Dave Rose said. ''It was a good team win, even though there were a couple of guys that really stepped it up.''

Chris Smith led Utah State (3-3) with a career-high 25 points. Darius Perkins had 21, and Jalen Moore 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Aggies.

Free throws by Smith gave USU a 47-44 lead with 13 minutes to play, but USU then went nearly 7 minutes without a field goal, while BYU went on a 12-0 run, highlighted by two 3-pointers and a 16-foot jumper by Haws.

''We didn't shoot the ball very well from the perimeter and we were a little bit scattered defensively,'' Rose said. ''But what we really did was find other ways to impact the game.''

USU was also hurt when center David Collette, who had 12 points, fouled out with 4:42 to play and the Cougars leading 68-58. USU had 15 turnovers to six for BYU.

There were six lead changes and four ties in the first half and the Aggies led 32-31 at halftime.

Haws was 12 of 13 from the free throw line and Collinsworth 10 of 10. The Cougars shot 34 of 39 from the charity stripe, many of them coming late in the contest as the Aggies fouled to gain possession.

The Cougars shot 5 of 25 from 3-point range, with Haws nailing three of those.

USU had better luck shooting from distance, hitting 8 of 16, but were only 21 of 30 from the free throw line. Smith was 7 of 10 from the field and 3 of 5 from 3-point range.

The Cougars outrebounded Utah State 46-33.

''Rebounds are haunting us,'' USU head coach Stew Morrill said. ''And David Collette has got to stay on the floor for us. We've got to keep him in the basketball game. We also didn't have enough of the bench. When we get into conference play, depth is going to be really important.''

TIP-INS

BYU came into the contest shooting 43 percent from 3-point range, including a 10-shot performance by Chase Fischer last week.

USU had won the last six games against the Cougars in Logan and is now 46-15 against teams from the state of Utah in the last 15 years.

FLYING HIGH

Both Chris Smith and Dairus Perkins had career-high nights in scoring for Utah State and Jalen Moore had his first career double-double.

Utah State is 31-2 at home against teams from the state of Utah under coach Stew Morrill.

''BYU's got a lot of depth,'' Morrill noted. ''We had them wondering there for a while but we couldn't play well enough in that one stretch and that hurt us.''
