Division-III Knox College has reversed its one-game suspension of a women's basketball player who made the "hands up, don't shoot" gesture at a game last weekend, the school announced.
Ariyana Smith, a junior forward for the Galesburg, Illinois, school, raised her arms in protest during the national before a game against Fontbonne University. She fell to her knees along the baseline and then walked out of the gym.
The game was being played in Clayton, Missouri, the same city where a grand jury convened and declined to indict police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown.
"I could not go into that gymnasium and pretend that everything was okay," Smith told WQAD. "I could not, in good conscience, I could not play that game."
The school says Smith was suspended not because of the protest, but because she left the gym and did not play.
