Colorado State holds off UTEP, 65-62

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) J.J. Avila had 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists to lead Colorado State to a 65-62 win over Texas-El Paso on Wednesday night.

Daniel Bejarano hit a 3 with 7:30 left to put the Rams (7-0) up eight but UTEP cut its deficit to three when Earvin Morris was fouled on a layup with 55 seconds left.

Morris missed the free throw and Vince Hunter came down with the offensive rebound, but couldn't convert the put-back.

After a stop on the other end, C.J. Cooper missed a 3-pointer which would have tied it with 3 seconds left.

Stanton Kidd had 15 points, eight boards and four assists and Gian Clavell added 13 points for Colorado State, which shot 46.7 percent from 3-point range.

Julian Washburn scored 16 and Cedrick Lang added 13 points and seven boards for UTEP.

The Rams never trailed.
