Georgetown players took the floor before Wednesday's game against Kansas wearing black T-shirts with the phrase "I Can't Breathe" on the front.

The Hoyas are the first major college team to wear the shirts, which several professional athletes have worn.

"I can't breathe" were the last words of Eric Garner, a 43-year-old New York City man who died in July after a police officer put him in a chokehold. The incident was captured on video. The medical examiner ruled Garner's death a homicide but a grand jury chose not to indict the officer, Daniel Pantaleo.

The phrase has been chanted by crowds across the country protesting police brutality.

Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose became the first NBA player to wear the shirt on Saturday. Kyrie Irving and LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers and four Brooklyn Nets players wore the shirts on Monday
