MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Memphis has reached agreement on a contract extension with football coach Justin Fuente, who just led the Tigers to a share of their first conference title since 1971.

The school announced the agreement Thursday in a university release. Details of the deal were not released.

''Our football program has enjoyed unprecedented success under Coach Fuente's leadership and we are excited to finalize this process and move forward,'' athletic director Tom Bowen said in a statement. ''The future of Tiger football is very bright and we look forward to the opportunity to build upon our success in the days and years ahead. ''

Fuente owns a 16-20 record in three seasons at Memphis, including a 9-3 mark this year. The Tigers had gone 5-31 in the three years before the former TCU offensive coordinator's arrival.

Memphis shared the American Athletic Conference title with Cincinnati and UCF. The Tigers hadn't won a league championship of any sort since topping the Missouri Valley Conference in 1971.

The Tigers will make their first bowl appearance since 2008 on Monday when they face BYU (8-4) in the Miami Beach Bowl.
