Boston College, Steve Addazio agree on new deal that goes through 2020

Boston College and head coach Steve Addazio have agreed to a new contract, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Addazio will imminently sign a deal with the school that extends his contract through 2020.

This development removes Addazio from the search for a new coach at Michigan, where he was considered one of the prime candidates after San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh. Michigan didn’t make direct contact with Addazio, but a source said the school reached out to gauge his interest.

Addazio declined to comment on Michigan's interest. He said he is delighted at the prospect of the extension at Boston College.

“I love my job,” Addazio said in a phone interview on Thursday. “I have great commitment from (school president Father William Leahy) and (athletic director) Brad Bates and the rest of the administration. I work with great coaches and have a chance to be around a great group of kids every day. I really enjoy where I live. I’m a New England kid and appreciative grateful for this opportunity.”

The move signals Addazio’s desire to stay long term at Boston College, where he has completely turned around the program in just two seasons. Addazio has gone 14-11, leading the team to bowl games in both years. Boston College will play Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 27.

Addazio inherited a team that went 2-10 in 2012 under Frank Spaziani and turned it around immediately and authoritatively. Addazio has also impressed on the recruiting trail, where Boston College ranks No. 35 nationally, according to Rivals.com, ahead of programs like Michigan State, Maryland and Virginia.

Boston College tailback Andre Williams became a Heisman Trophy finalist last season, and senior transfer Tyler Murphy broke the ACC single-season rushing record for a quarterback this fall.

Addazio is 27-22 as a head coach, which includes a two-year stint at Temple. He earned that job after serving as the offensive coordinator and interim head coach at Florida.
