Winder scores 25 as BYU beats UMass 77-71 in overtime

PROVO, Utah (AP) With BYU's main guy hobbling and not at full strength, someone else needed to have a big game.

Brigham Young coach Dave Rose found that guy sitting a few seats away.

''Today it was Anson (Winder). But really he's played good for us all year,'' Rose said.

Winder scored 25 points off the bench and Kyle Collinsworth added 18 points and 15 rebounds as BYU held off UMass 77-71 in overtime on Tuesday.

Five of Winder's points came in overtime after the Cougars (10-3) fell behind by four early in the extra period.

The Minutemen (6-6) were led by 16 points and nine rebounds from Maxie Esho, before fouling out early in overtime.

''I thought when that happened it took a little wind out of our sails,'' UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. ''But we didn't cave. We fought back and stayed in the game.''

Donte Clark scored 14 off the bench. Trey Davis and Cady Lalanne added 11 each. Lalanne also grabbed 10 boards.

Tyler Haws, the No. 2 scorer in the country, scored only four points, snapping his consecutive games scoring in double figures at 60. Haws, normally BYU's go-to guy, clearly showed the effects of an ankle sprain suffered at Weber State 10 days ago and made only 2 of 9 in 27 minutes.

''With Tyler hurting we all knew we needed to step up our game, not just me,'' Winder said.

The Cougars made 26 of 32 free throws, while UMass made only 12 of 17. BYU outscored the Minutemen in bench points 41-17.

UMass had a chance to win the game in regulation but Esho hit only 1 of 2 free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining.

''It was a nervous feeling but we were able to claw this one out,'' Winder said.

UMass used a 12-0 run, with BYU failing to score on nine straight possessions, to take a 16-9 lead. The Cougars, with all five starters on the bench tied the game 19-19, with Winder scoring seven in the stretch.

The Cougars hit 4 of 4 from the line over the final 1:33, their only free throws of the half, to lead 32-30 at the intermission.

A layup by Winder put BYU ahead 41-36 before the Minutemen responded with 10-straight. A 3-pointer by Winder put BYU up 55-53, but Clark tied the game at 55-55 on a reverse layup.

Overall, the game was tied 14 times with 18 lead changes.

The Cougars took a 62-61 lead in the final minute on two free throws by Collinsworth. BYU had a chance to pad the lead but Davis' block with 15 seconds left gave the Minutemen the final chance to win.

Esho was fouled driving to the hoop with 1.5 seconds remaining. He made the first free throw to tie the game at 62-62, but the second attempt rattled out.

In overtime, Winder sank two free throws to put BYU up 69-68. Corbin Kaufusi followed with a hammer dunk to extend the margin to 71-68.

Clark missed a long 3-point attempt with 23 second left and Winder was fouled on the rebound, sinking both free throws to put the game away.

''This was a real team victory for us. Our guys, from top to bottom, battled in a game that was difficult for us to get into rhythm,'' Rose said.

UMass: Clark scored all of his 14 points in the second half. ... UMass is now 1-1 all-time against BYU, winning 105-96 last year.

BYU: Haws, averaging 23.8 points per game, went 0 for 2 in 13 first-half minutes for his first scoreless half in 27 games. ... BYU entered the game averaging 89 points, but has averaged only 73 the past four games.

NO LONG DISTANCE LOVE

The Minutemen, shooting only 29 percent from 3-point range on the season, took 22 shots from behind the arc, making only five. They were 3 of 16 in regulation. BYU hit only 5 of 21.

WARMING UP FROM THE LINE

At halftime UMass was 7 of 8 from the line while BYU was 4 of 4. The Minutemen shot nine free throws in the second half while the Cougars went to the line 28 times after the break.
