West Virginia QB Clint Trickett retiring because of concussions
West Virginia quarterback Clint Trickett said on Friday that he will retire from football and begin coaching, according to Allan Taylor of the West Virginia MetroNews.
Trickett said he sustained five concussions over the last 14 months, two of which he hid from trainers. The redshirt senior did not play in the regular season finale against Iowa State after reportedly sustaining a concussion the previous week.
"In the career I'm entering I probably need a few brain cells," Trickett said on Friday.
Trickett, a redshirt senior, is in his second season with the Mountaineers after beginning his career at Florida State. Trickett transferred to West Virginia after appearing in 17 games over two seasons with the Seminoles.
In two seasons at West Virginia, Trickett completed 60 percent of his pass attempts for 4,890 yards and 25 touchdowns with 17 interceptions. His statistics improved in 2014 as he led the Mountaineers to a 7-5 regular season record.
West Virginia will face Texas A&M in the Liberty Bowl on Monday. Sophomore Skylar Howardwill take Trickett's place in the starting lineup.
