Saint Mary's opens WCC play; beats Santa Clara 73-60

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) Brad Waldow scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Saint Mary's to a 73-60 win over Santa Clara in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams on Saturday.

Saint Mary's took its first double-digit lead of the game during an 8-2 run midway through the second half and built its lead to 64-45 with 6:50 left.

Senior Garrett Jackson had a career-high 18 points for Saint Mary's (8-3) and freshman Emmett Naar added a season-high 14. Kerry Carter scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Gaels.

Jackson hit a 3-pointer to give Saint Mary's a six-point lead with 2:04 left in the first half. Naar followed with a layup to tie his career-high of 12 points and Saint Mary led 34-30 at halftime. Jackson had nine at the break.

Brandon Clark led Santa Clara (5-7) with 24 points and Denzel Johnson added 10.
