Oregon State defeats UC Santa Barbara 76-64

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle said his team has a lot of different weapons and great chemistry.

''It's going to be different guys every night. Tonight, there was a lot of them that played really well,'' he said.

The Beavers had six players who scored in double figures as they beat UC Santa Barbara 76-64 Tuesday night.

Gary Payton II led the way with 14 points, nine rebounds and five steals, Jarmal Reid scored 16 points off the bench and Olaf Schaftenaar added 14 for Oregon State (9-3).

''We had six players in double figures, but that's not all. Guys are rebounding, guys were defending. It feels good and that's kind of our identity,'' said Langston Morris-Walker, who scored 11 points.

Alan Williams had 16 points and 12 rebounds, but shot 2-7 on free throws for the Gauchos. Michael Bryson added 16 points for UC Santa Barbara (5-7).

The Beavers were outrebounded by UC Santa Barbara 30-26, but forced the visitors into 18 turnovers.

''I thought we were extremely casual and careless, 18 turnovers, just did not compete,'' said Gauchos coach Bob Williams.

Williams added that he aspires for his team to compete for the Big West title. ''There has to be a drastic change in our preparation for us to be a championship caliber team,'' he said.

UC Santa Barbara, winless in five road games, led by 16 early after a Gabe Vincent 3-pointer made the score 26-10 at the 8:55 mark.

Oregon State responded with a 14-0 run, capped by a Payton steal and a Morris-Walker layup-and-one with 4:31 left in the first half.

''We started defending with a little more purpose, we started attacking the rim instead of settling, and we got great boost from guys off the bench,'' Tinkle said.

The game turned into a back-and-forth affair afterward, and the Beavers led 37-36 at the break.

Oregon State began to pull away in the second half, and a Malcolm Duvivier 3-pointer put the Beavers ahead 65-54 with 3:43 left.

The Beavers made 8 of 9 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Williams, the first Gauchos player named to the Naismith Trophy Men's 50 Watch List, came into the game leading UC Santa Barbara with 18 points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.3 blocked shots per game. He is the reigning Big West Player of the Year.

Payton, a junior college transfer, entered Tuesday's game leading the Beavers with 12.4 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game.

He is the son of Gary Payton, a former All-American for the Beavers who was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.

UC Santa Barbara has lost three overtime road games this season, most recently to Oregon on Dec. 22. . Williams came into the matchup with 947 career rebounds, tops among active players in NCAA Division I.

Oregon State was holding opponents to 34.2 percent shooting before Tuesday's contest, good for seventh in the nation. UC Santa Barbara shot 50 percent against the Beavers. . Payton was held scoreless in his previous game, at Quinnipiac.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Oregon State has won all of its games in Corvallis this season, and its 8-0 home record is its best start at Gill Coliseum since 1998-1999, when the Beavers opened 10-0 at home.

The elder Payton attended Tuesday's game, talking with fans, posing for photos and signing autographs during halftime.

LONG NIGHT

Reid spent much of the game matched up with Williams. ''He was strong. He was big. It was a long night, but it was well worth it. . We did whatever we could to stop him,'' Reid said.
