SMU hires Joe Craddock, Van Malone as top assistant coaches

DALLAS (AP) New SMU coach Chad Morris is hiring former Clemson assistant Joe Craddock as offensive coordinator and ex-Oklahoma State cornerbacks coach Van Malone to run the defense.

Morris announced his staff Monday, a little more than a month after he was hired. The others are Dustin Fry (offensive line), Keith Gunn (defensive assistant), Jess Loepp (defensive backs), Claude Mathis (running backs), Archie McDaniel (linebackers), Justin Stepp (receivers) and Bill Young (defensive line).

Craddock worked under Morris for three years at Clemson, where Morris was offensive coordinator.

Malone was a defensive back at Texas from 1990-93 before graduating from Houston in the NFL's degree program in 2002. The former NFL player coached defensive backs for three years at Oklahoma State after previous stints at Tulsa, Texas A&M, North Texas and Western Michigan.
