Hampton holds off Bethune-Cookman 58-56

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) Reginald Johnson scored 17 points and Hampton held off Bethune-Cookman 58-56 on Saturday.

Quentin Brewer's jumper with 8:01 left drew Bethune-Cookman within one at 41-40, but Hampton responded by scoring the next 10 points - including Johnson's 3-pointer - to lead 50-40 with 2:41 left. Brewer's trey cut it to two with 25 seconds left but Brian Darden made a pair of free throws and BC's Ricky Johnson missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

Darden drilled a 3-pointer with 9:27 left in the first and the Pirates led 23-18 at the break as Bethune-Cookman was just 7 of 21 from the floor before intermission. Darden led all scorers in the half with seven.

Johnson was 7 of 11 from the floor for Hampton (7-8, 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Darden finished with 12 points.

Brewer paced Bethune-Cookman (4-12, 0-2) with 20 points and nine boards. Ricky Johnson had 11 points and five assists.
