Carlton gives Howard 71-69 win over Coppin State

WASHINGTON (AP) James Carlton scored 19 points, including two free throws with a half second left, to give Howard a 71-69 win over Coppin State on Saturday.

The Bison (8-9, 2-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) got the ball after the Eagles (1-15, 0-2) turned it over with 3.8 seconds left. After a timeout they advanced the ball across halfcourt and called a timeout with 2.5 seconds remaining before Carlton was fouled by Dallas Gary.

Coppin State had a 69-67 lead after two free throws by Sterling Smith at 44.3 seconds but James Daniel III tied it with two free throws 37.5 seconds to go.

Daniel finished with 19 points.

Gary had 16 points, 12 in the second half, Taariq Cephas had 15 and Smith 12 for Coppin State.

Howard led by 11 late in the first half and led 35-29 at the break as Daniel had 16.

The teams combined for 55 fouls and 71 free throws.
