Oregon struck first in Monday's national championship game, with Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota throwing a touchdown to Keanon Lowe on the game's opening possession.

The Ducks went 75 yards on 11 plays in 2:39 to take a 7-0 lead.

Ohio State answered eight minutes later with an touchdown run by running back Ezekiel Elliott. Elliott eluded several Ducks defenders for a 33-yard score that tied the game at 7.

On Ohio State's next possession, quarterback Cardale Jones and tight end Nick Vannett connected for a one-yard touchdown. Lined up in the shotgun, Jones received the snap, faked a handoff to Elliott and found Vannett near the goal line. The junior tight end caught the pass and fell into the end zone.

The score capped a five-play drive and put the Buckeyes up, 14-7.

With less than five minutes remaining in the half, Ohio State scored another touchdown, this time on a one-yard run by Jones. On third down, Jones rushed to the line of scrimmage, took the snap and rushed forward for the touchdown. The score capped a six-play drive and gave the Buckeyes a 21-7 lead.

At the half, Ohio State led, 21-10.

Oregon responded early in the third quarter when Mariota connected with wide receiver Byron Marshall for a 70-yard touchdown. It initially appeared as if Marshall may have dropped the ball as part of a celebration before crossing the goal line, but the play was ruled a touchdown.

On the last play of the third quarter, Elliott scored a nine-yard rushing touchdown to give the Buckeyes a 28-20 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Elliott ran two yards for his third touchdown of the game to put Ohio State up 35-20.
