Quinn has 14, helps San Diego State beats No. 25 Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) A little role reversal may have helped San Diego State pick up a rare win at Wyoming.

Aqeel Quinn scored 14 points, Trey Kell had 12 off the bench in the second half and Winston Shepard contributed 10 points and six rebounds as the Aztecs snapped No. 25 Wyoming's 13-game, home winning streak with a 60-52 victory on Wednesday night.

''Normally we come in here as the ranked team,'' Shepard said. ''Today the shoe was on the other foot. We were the hunter.''

In a game featuring two of the top four defensive teams in the NCAA, San Diego State (13-4, 3-1 Mountain West) relied on strong play from its reserves, who outscored the Cowboys' reserves 24-0.

Wyoming (15-2, 4-1) lost its first conference game of the season just three days after the Cowboys broke into the AP Top 25 for the first time since 1988.

Larry Nance Jr. led the Cowboys with 19 points and eight rebounds. Josh Adams contributed 14 points.

The Aztecs avenged losses over the last two years when it came to Laramie ranked. Last year, San Diego State was ranked No. 5 when it fell to the Cowboys.

''We came with a different type of mentality and edge about us as opposed to last year and the year before,'' Aztecs coach Steve Fisher said. ''It's hard for anyone to win here. This is a tough place to play.''

San Diego State had a 34-26 edge on the boards, including a 13-5 advantage on the offensive end. That resulted in the Aztecs gaining a 15-2 margin on second-chance points.

The Aztecs led 26-24 at halftime thanks to a full-court pressure defense that forced eight turnovers in the first half.

San Diego State built a 12-point lead with 8:36 remaining after Kell and Dakarai Allen hit consecutive 3-pointers.

''They hit some uncharacteristic threes and swayed the momentum of the game,'' Nance said.

Wyoming got no closer than five points twice in the last 2 minutes.

Wyoming entered the game third in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 52.2 points a game. San Diego State is fourth with 53.5.

Wyoming coach Larry Shyatt said he wasn't too disheartened by the loss because San Diego State is a quality team and his Cowboys fought hard.

''I did not think we lost,'' Shyatt said. ''I thought they took it from us and they beat us.''

It was the 75th game between Wyoming and San Diego State, and Wyoming holds a 39-36 advantage in the series. The Aztecs are just 9-26 in Laramie. Steve Fisher's teams have won seven of nine at Laramie.
