St John's tops Providence for first Big East win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) D'Angelo Harrison and Phil Greene IV scored 20 apiece Wednesday night to lead St. John's to its first Big East win of the season, 83-70 over Providence.

Rysheed Jordan added 15 points and Sir'Dominic Pointer had scored 14 and grabbed seven rebounds for St. John's (12-4, 1-3), which shot 51 percent overall and made a season-high 10 3-pointers.

Providence (13-5, 3-2) trailed 49-32 early in the second half but used a 16-2 run, during which St. John's made just 1 of 10 field goals, to cut the Friars' deficit to 51-48 when Tyler Harris made a pair of free throws with 10:13 remaining.

Back-to-back 3's by Greene and Harrison pushed the St. John's lead back to nine about 3 minutes later and back-to-back layups by Greene made it 69-57 with 3:32 left.

The Red Storm made 14 of 16 free throws, including 9 of 10 by Pointer, from there to seal it.

Kris Dunn had 17 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for Providence.
