Washington pulls away late to beat Oregon State 56-43

SEATTLE (AP) Most of the attention was on the names Payton and Kemp, both on the court and watching from the stands.

That left opportunity for little known Mike Anderson to stand out and help Washington snap its four-game losing streak.

''It was just me being confident with my shot,'' Anderson said. ''The coaches, my teammates telling me to shoot the ball. I just felt like I had my spots and I knocked it down.''

Anderson scored all 11 of his points in the second half, Andrew Andrews added 12 off the bench, and Washington snapped its skid with a 56-43 win over Oregon State on Thursday night.

The matchup featured Washington's Shawn Kemp Jr. and Oregon State's Gary Payton II meeting on the court for the first time in college, with their famous fathers watching from the stands. The elder Payton started the game watching behind the Oregon State bench before joining the elder Kemp courtside as the former Seattle SuperSonics teammates watched their sons meet.

''I almost went over there to hang out with them,'' Washington coach Lorenzo Romar joked.

After an ugly first half, Anderson came up big in the second half as the Huskies (12-4, 1-3 Pac-12) avoided starting Pac-12 Conference play 0-4. Anderson knocked down a trio of 3-pointers, and his last with 2:50 remaining gave Washington a 49-41 lead.

Robert Upshaw added 12 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks for Washington.

Malcolm Duvivier and Jarmal Reid led Oregon State (11-5, 2-2) with 10 points each, but the Beavers were unable to build on last Sunday's upset of Arizona.

Both teams had scoring droughts of more than 8 minutes in the first half. They combined for 14 made field goals and 16 turnovers. Washington went more than 9 minutes without scoring until Kemp's basket at the rim with 1:14 left in the half. Andrews added a pair of free throws in the final minute and Washington held a 19-15 lead at halftime.

Washington finally created separation midway through the second half behind a 10-2 run. After falling behind 27-26, two free throws from Kemp put the Huskies back in front. Andrews and Anderson sandwiched 3-pointers around a layup by Nigel Williams-Goss and quickly the Huskies took a 36-29 lead, their largest of the game to that point.

Oregon State pulled within 42-37, but consecutive 3-pointers by Andrews and Anderson and free throws by Andrews pushed the Huskies lead to 10 with 2 minutes left.

''Credit to them because we were making the game ugly, making it the way we had to and then we missed some assignments defensively,'' Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle said. ''They made us pay with timely 3s and then we were a little slow they drove by us and we gave up way too many easy baskets.''

TIP-INS

Oregon State: Gary Payton II's lone field goal was memorable, driving baseline in the second half and dunking over Andrew Andrews. Payton had eight rebounds and four blocks.

Washington: Robert Upshaw set a new single-season school record for blocked shots. Upshaw now has 72 blocks and leads the country.

LACK OF DEPTH

Both teams were short-handed. Washington forward Jenard Jarreau suffered a knee injury last Saturday against Washington State and will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Friday. Jarreau was averaging 5.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. He's expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks. Jarreau tore the ACL in the same knee last year.

Oregon State was without top reserve Victor Robbins, who was suspended for 10 games for a violation of athletic department policy. Robbins was averaging 10.3 points off the bench for the Beavers.

''Don't have time to worry about it. We've got to have other guys step up,'' Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle said.

Andrews was benched for the start of Thursday's game after what Washington coach Lorenzo Romar called a ''miscommunication'' in regards to shootaround. Romar said Andrews would likely start Sunday vs. Oregon.
