BYU and Michigan State have signed a contract for a home-and-home series beginning in 2016, the schools announced on Wednesday.

On Oct. 8, 2016, the Spartans will host the Cougars in East Lansing, Mich., for the first-ever meeting between the schools. The return trip in Provo, Utah, will be held on Sept. 12, 2020.

The 2016 season is also when the Big Ten Conference will resume a nine-game conference slate. Michigan State's other non-conference opponents in 2016 will be Furman from the Football Championship Subdivision and Notre Dame.

Way-too-early Top 25 for 2015

"We continue to be aggressive and innovative in our approach to non-conference scheduling, as we seek to bring the top programs in college football to our state as well as provide out student-athletes with an opportunity to compete nationally at the highest level," MSU athletic director Mark Hollis said in the release.

BYU left the Mountain West Conference after the 2010 season and has competed as an independent since, going 8-5 each of the last three seasons. Its 2014 slate included wins at Texas and California and a 55-48 overtime loss to Memphis in a brawl-marred Miami Beach Bowl.
