Virginia Tech F Joey Van Zegeren to leave team
Virginia Tech forward Joey Van Zegeren will leave the team, coach Buzz Williams announced on Thursday.
Van Zegeren will remain on scholarship until he graduates in May, according to a school news release.
“Joey and I met several times over the past week. Today, we decided that it would be best if he leaves the team to focus on completing his degree and focus on his development as he looks toward the next phase of his basketball career,” Williams said. “He is good young man who continues to grow as a person and a player. I will be proud of him when he walks across the stage in May as a Virginia Tech graduate.”
Van Zegeren has not played since being suspended indefinitely earlier this season. Over 13 games this season, the redshirt junior averaged 9.8 points and 5.3 rebounds.
The Hokies (8-9) have lost all four of their Atlantic Coast Conference games and host No. 8 Notre Dame on Thursday.
