Duke center Marshall Plumlee will be sworn into the United States Army during a ceremony on Friday, reports the Duke Chronicle.

Plumlee, a 7-foot, 255-pound junior, has been a student in Duke’s ROTC program since the 2012-13 academic year and hopes to complete his requirements to become an officer by next spring.

The maximum height permitted for enlistment into the Army is 80 inches. Plumlee is four inches above that threshold but was approved for a special waiver.

Students who graduate from ROTC are required to serve at least eight years in the Army once they are commissioned.

Plumlee is averaging 2.5 points and 2.4 rebounds in nine minutes per game this season for the fifth-ranked Blue Devils.

Plumlee has two older brothers who play in the NBA. Mason Plumlee plays for the Brooklyn Nets and Miles Plumlee plays for the Phoenix Suns.
