President Barack Obama released a statement on the death of former University of North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith in which he credited the coach with advancing the Civil Rights movement and reaffirmed the pride with which he bestowed on Smith a Presidential Medal Of Freedom in 2013.

Among the many players Smith coached was Michael Jordan, an eventual NBA legend with President Obama's beloved Bulls.

In January, President Obama issued a statement of condolences for another University of North Carolina-affiliated personage, ESPN's Stuart Scott, who died after a long battle with cancer.
