North Carolina to hire Nebraska secondary coach Charlton Warren
Nebraska secondary coach Charlton Warren is joining North Carolina in the same role, according to a source.
The move reunites Warren and Tar Heels coach Larry Fedora, who were together at Air Force from 1997-98. Warren was a defensive back for the Falcons when Fedora was the service academy’s quarterbacks and wide receivers coach.
Warren, 38, replaces former North Carolina cornerbacks coach Dan Disch. He was fired earlier this month as part of Fedora’s overhaul of his defensive staff. The Tar Heels were one of the FBS’ worst defenses last season.

Warren is regarded as one of college football’s brightest young defensive coaches and is a well-respected recruiter, especially in his native Atlanta. This past season was Warren’s first at Nebraska, and new Cornhuskers coach Mike Riley retained him last month.
Before his arrival in Lincoln, Warren was an assistant at Air Force from 2007-13. He was associate head coach, defensive coordinator and secondary coach in his last two seasons with the Falcons.
He was Air Force’s co-defensive coordinator, secondary coach and recruiting coordinator from 2008-11. He also coached the secondary and was recruiting coordinator his first three seasons with the program, where he played from 1995-98.
In addition to Warren, Fedora recently hired former Auburn coach Gene Chizik as his defensive coordinator and former Nebraska defensive coordinator John Papuchis as a defensive assistant. This next season is a critical year for Fedora, who has a 21-17 record in his three seasons at North Carolina, including a 6-7 mark last year.
