Coppin State tops Delaware State 96-92

DOVER, Del. (AP) Sterling Smith tied a career-high 27 points, Arnold Fripp added 22 and Coppin State topped Delaware State 96-92 on Monday.

Smith was 9 of 15 from the floor, 6 of 10 beyond the arc and grabbed 10 rebounds. Fripp made three 3-pointers, had 10 boards and three blocked shots.

Coppin State (6-20, 5-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) closed the first half on a 15-4 run - including a 3-pointer by Fripp and six straight free throws by three players - and led 48-36 at the break.

Delaware State trimmed its deficit to eight on a three-point play by Jason Owens midway through the second, but Coppin State responded with a 13-2 run, with another Fripp trey to go up 76-57.

Delaware State chipped away down the stretch as Coppin State struggled at the line late (3 of 8).

Amere May led Delaware State (12-14, 6-5) with 39 points and Kendall Gray added a career-high 25 points with 12 boards.
