Before Wednesday's highly anticipated rivalry matchup, Duke and North Carolina met at center court of Cameron Indoor Stadium to honor legendary Tar Heels coach Dean Smith.

Smith died earlier this month at 83, sparking a national remembrance of the coach who retired in 1997 as the winningest in men's Division I history with 879 wins in 36 seasons. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski now holds the record with 1,005 wins.

Never forget: Dean Smith was the best, and I was there at the start

The two teams came together just before the national anthem. Krzyzewski embraced UNC coach Roy Williams before coaches and players from both teams knelt around the center-court circle.

No. 4 Duke entered halftime with a 49-42 lead over No. 15 UNC.
